ELECTION 2007: How clean is Donegal’s water, and other pertinent political questions…?
As Galway’s 90,000 residents continue to survive on bottled water, there are questions about Donegal’s water quality and other environmental issues begging to be addressed.
Save The Swilly, which has campaigned for the introduction of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in Lough Swilly, is posing some core questions to all candidates in the forthcoming General Election:
- Does Donegal County Council have waste-water treatment capacity to cope with the sewage, sludge and other pollutants finding their way into our freshwater and into our coastal zone?
- Is Donegal’s water safe to drink?
- Is the water off Donegal’s beaches safe for swimmers?
- Have all stakeholders in the coastal resource been adequately consulted?
- What action is being taken to deal with continuing disputes between indigenous oyster fishermen and licensed aquaculture operators?
- What action has/is being taken to ensure that all licensed aquaculture operators are in full compliance with their licence conditions?
- Why has the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources failed to implement Integrated Coastal Zone Management?
- Are clean water and proper management of the coastal zone important to our elected representatives, and to those who hope to replace them?
“Save The Swilly’s members and supporters have never believed that it is acceptable to play Russian roulette with our water, which the Government has done by attempting to function without a long-term plan. The Government has been proclaiming its support for Integrated Coastal Zone Management for more than a decade, but no progress has been made beyond lip-service,” said Mr Tony Morrison, Chairman of Save The Swilly.
“As a group, Save The Swilly has repeatedly warned that failure to approach the management of our coastal zone in a systematic way would have negative consequences, but these calls have been ignored. At considerable taxpayer expense, reports are issued and conferences are held, but where is the evidence of coastal zone management being implemented on the ground?”
With more than 60% of Ireland’s population living in the coastal zone this is not a peripheral issue. In the Ireland of the 21st century it is time we addressed the issues of water quality and the coastal zone as mainstream policy. Save The Swilly calls on all candidates in the forthcoming election to declare their positions on these crucial issues -- issues which transcend political party boundaries.
