Press Releases Save The Swilly 1 October 2002 PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS INTEGRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT
Save The Swilly is inviting anyone interested in the development of Lough Swilly to attend a meeting at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny at 8.00pm on Monday, 7th October. Dr Andrew Cooper, Head of the Coastal Studies Research Group at the University of Ulster in Coleraine, will explain the meaning and significance of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), and how it should be applied in Lough Swilly. A new coastal research centre being developed at the University aims to advise on new European Union recommendations regarding coastal zone management as one of its primary tasks.
Save The Swilly is convening the meeting with the aim of taking the debate surrounding the future of Lough Swilly forward. The focus of the meeting will be ICZM, and there will be opportunity for an exchange of views. Dr Cooper, an expert on Ireland's coastline, has made the point that "various groups are not working together to make use of (Lough Swilly's) valuable resource…major economic development opportunities are being missed".
He will be available to elaborate on this point and other recommendations made in the Scoping Study for an ICZM strategy for Lough Swilly produced by Dr Cooper and colleagues at the University of Ulster. Among these recommendations are:
The carrying capacity for each use of Lough Swilly - fishing, tourism, aquaculture, waste disposal, etc - should be considered from physical, ecological and social perspectives.
The economic benefits of all existing and potential (but realistic) uses of the lough and its surroundings should be assessed.
A management body should be established for Lough Swilly that is representative of all interested groups and activities. These include conservation, fishing, aquaculture, angling, agriculture, recreation, shipping, tourism.
The Donegal County Council should be the lead agency for the management body.
Everyone with an interest in the future of Lough Swilly is invited to attend this meeting.
