Save The Swilly/Green Party candidate to contest Donegal North-East

Save The Swilly, the environmental group concerned about aquaculture expansion in Lough Swilly, has come to an agreement with the Green Party to put up a candidate in the Donegal North-East constituency for the forthcoming Dail elections.

The candidate, Dr Peter Doran, is a respected environmentalist, with a wealth of international experience in his sphere. He has worked as a consultant to the United Nations Secretariat at conferences on environment and development. Born in South-west Donegal, Dr Doran lives in Moville, and is committed to issues such as sustainable development and the quest for economic activity that does not destroy the environment.

Save The Swilly has been calling for a stop to aquaculture licensing until a comprehensive scientific study has been completed. According to Save The Swilly chairman Tony Morrison, the selection of Dr Peter Doran to represent the group’s interests had come about after an extensive assessment of political options available to it.

"We have met Fianna Fail ministers; we have met the Fine Gael spokesman on the marine and his local colleagues; we have met the Sinn Fein candidate. None of these parties appears capable of anything but fence-sitting on this most vital issue of the future of Lough Swilly. The only exception has been the Labour Party, whose candidate in Donegal North-East, Jackie McNair has been a supporter of Save The Swilly from its inception. We will be advising our members and supporters to vote for our candidate, Dr Peter Doran, and to give Jackie McNair their second preferences," said Mr Morrison.

Aside from the Green Party and Save The Swilly, it is expected that a wide range of groups and individuals with similar and overlapping concerns and interests will support the Save The Swilly/Green Party candidate. To this end, talks have already been held with community groups on both sides of the lough, and these talks will intensify in the coming days.

"Save The Swilly is not a political organisation, and has no intention of becoming one," Mr Morrison said. "However, we are determined that the people living and working on the shores of Lough Swilly should be given an opportunity to express their democratic will on an issue that has been clouded in secrecy." Mr Morrison stressed that Save The Swilly is not opposed to development. "What we want is for everyone around the Swilly to have an equal say in the development of this area, which is part of our chlldren’s heritage. As far as we are concerned, the Swilly should come first."
