SAVE THE SWILLY REAFFIRMS CALL FOR MORATORIUM

Save The Swilly has this week reaffirmed its call for a moratorium on all aquaculture licensing in Donegal's Lough Swilly until a detailed baseline study and an independent environmental impact assessment have been conducted.

The umbrella body, which represents 25 groups in the Lough Swilly area, has refuted claims that it welcomes the new aquaculture initiative announced by the government last month. It was reported in certain newspapers in Donegal last week that Save The Swilly had given a "guarded welcome" to the initiative.

"This is inaccurate," a spokesperson for Save The Swilly said. "As a group we have no opinion on this initiative. Our objective concerning aquaculture in Lough Swilly is simple: We call on the government to suspend all aquaculture licensing until an independent baseline study and a comprehensive and independent environmental impact assessment (EIA) on Lough Swilly and Mulroy Bay have been completed, and concerned residents in the area have been consulted. We have more than 8,000 names - and growing daily - on a petition to support this demand."
